Holding a Star (162 Words)
There are times when fairies steal humans away, either for the short term or forever. This visit, hasty as it was, had been planned for two years.
“Hold it tight,” said the fairy woman anxiously. “Don’t drop it!”
The man with her was already fumbling his star. Not for the first time, the bright beam of light slipped between his fingers.
“Ah—sorry.”
The fairy scanned the nearest clouds. Thankfully, they were alone.
“We practiced!” she whispered. “What’s the matter?”
“Well, to be honest,” the man said, “there is a difference between stars and apples.”
The fairy giggled. She couldn’t help it, remembering all the times she had carried a basket of apples and tossed one for him to catch, pretending they were scattering stars together while walking through the green orchard.
Hearing her laugh, the man’s face softened with pleasure.
“There are going to be a lot of falling stars tonight,” he warned. “I’m wishing on every single one of them.”
