Nothing but Lights (173 Words)

Is that it? The dragon’s voice was in his head. Eric almost lost his grip on the halter buckled on her shoulders, surprised again by her telepathy. Ovah was an enormous beast and the city was far, far below them.

Eric closed his eyes, using his mind to speak to the dragon. Yes. That’s it.

Do you want me to go closer?

What the—no, no, no, not in hell. What is she? Crazy? Get closer?

The dragon vibrated with laughter. You’re doing it again. I can still hear you.

Eric opened his eyes. “Can you always hear my thoughts?”

Only when you send them to me.

Eric shook his head. He didn’t trust himself not to think.

Why did you want to come? Ovah asked. I would not want to see a place like this. I would not want to remember it.

“I want to remember.” Eric’s voice was raised over the wind. “I never want to forget. I want to remember how small it is. It’s nothing to me now—nothing.”
