The Wishing Pool (173 words)
Where the wishes went, no one knew. Silver pennies went up and down, disappearing into the bottomless black water.
“Shh, shh, don’t tell me what it is,” said the goblin. “Just let it go.”
That was an impossible thing—letting wishes go. Emmy looked down at the coin in her hand and dropped it into the water, a little girl’s wish going down, down, and down.
The goblin saw the child’s shiver. It was not a cold afternoon, but there was more than coldness in her pale, sad face.
“Where do they go?” the girl asked. “The wishes?”
The goblin leaned over the water. “Come back at night and look into the pool. You will see.”
That night, Emmy crept out. She was very careful as she made her way through the woods to the dark lake. When she reached the water, she crouched down and looked.
Silver lights were shining, millions of them. They mingled together in each ripple, a thousand wishes blending into light.
She looked up and saw the stars.
